17. mai & Eurovision!

Helloooo!

Yes, two in one week! So much happened the last few days that I felt like I had to write about it.

For those of you who don’t know, the 17th of May is Norway’s Constitution Day, which is a bit like the 4th of July in the US but better. Accordingly, my choir was singing all day, from 7am until around 3pm. Bergen has a LOT of festivities for the day, so there was a lot to take part in.

Of course, starting at 6:45 (important to warm up) is never easy. We had a fire alarm in my building here at 23:30 the night before, so I only ended up getting around 3-4 hours of sleep for my 5:30 ish start…

Anyway, the actual day itself. We started giving a concert, as said, at 7am. Immediately after the cannonfire from Skansen (a cliff on Fløyen), we sang the national anthem (Ja, vi elsker), Bergen’s “national anthem” (Nystemten, we didn’t have a band) and the song that won the competition to be Norway’s anthem but never became it because it was “too hard” (Sønner av Norge). After that, we had some akevitt (Norway’s national spirit), as is tradition. It was absolutely the earliest time of day I have drunk alcohol in my life. Fun! Next up was a hearty breakfast with Sirenene, our sister choir. Good food and good company made for an excellent meal which I very much enjoyed.

Following the breakfast, we had another concert, this time at Bryggen, the line of German merchant houses built during the time of the Hanseatic League. This was with Sirenene and another student choir in Bergen, BLAK. My wonderful parents were there to watch this one, as well as all our other public concerts throughout the day! Following the national anthems, we went down to Bergenhus Fortress to join in with the parade through the city. This was fantastic fun, if not very very tiring, as we were doing silly gags and running and singing and shouting for over an hour. Needless to say, this was the point where I started losing my voice. The parade ended at Festplassen, by Lille Lungegårdsvannet. We then had a short break for lunch and rest. It was needed.

Following the break, we held a concert at the Blue Stone, a landmark in Bergen city centre. We woo’d and wow’d with our buttery smooth voices, and this time we sang less serious songs, so we had a bit of dancing and pizzazz to show off. 10/10. The next two concerts were private arrangements at Enkers old people’s home and Grand Hotell, the second one being in front of the committee who organises the event within the city. They both went excellently. The final performance of the day was just around the corner, outside the Sundt building. We sang with Sirenene again, singing Ja, vi elsker and Nystemten, and then following them up with songs by ourselves. At this point I was absolutely exhausted, and it was time for my parents to go to the airport. From what they’ve told me they really enjoyed their stay in Bergen over the last week, and the 17th was a great way to top it all off. Once I got home from the airport, I ate some food and then went to bed early, at around 21:30. I needed it.

Yesterday was also very exciting, as the Eurovision Grand Final was on! I was invited to a party at my friend Frode’s flat, and we could dress up. So, I went out and acquired a costume that resembled what the band Hatari for Iceland were wearing. I will not post a picture due to wanting to keep my website family friendly, but the outfit was a roaring success and got a few laughs, which was kind of the point. The drinking games during the show itself took their toll on me, and I’ve woken up today with a bit of a hangover, but it was absolutely worth it!

It was a long one today to make up for the shorter blog posts recently. Thanks for taking the time to read!

Heisann!

Ja, to utover ei veke!

Men samma det, her kjem dagen derpå.

Det trengst ikkje seie her at eg begynte å miste stemma litt her.

Dei gjekk utmerka, begge to.

Takk for at du las!

Nynorskretting har alltid merke pålagd. :)
